Expanding Your Friend Group at Any Age
On: April 20, 2017 , In: Uncategorized , 0 Comments
Did you know that individuals with larger social networks are less likely to be depressed, experience lower levels of stress and report feeling more self-confident?
Having a solid group of friends in your life can also help you protect your sobriety if you are working through substance abuse issues. If you start to feel overwhelmed or anxious about the prospect of relapsing, they can help offer you the compassion and support you need to stay sober.
If you are creating a new life for yourself, one that is free from drugs and alcohol, expanding your friend group is a great start. Here are a few ideas for making new friends in your community!
(1) Invest in your 12-step community.
When you are in the early stages of recovery, you should prioritize spending time with other members of your 12-step community. By surrounding yourself with individuals who have worked through some of those very same issues, you’ll likely feel more comfortable about meeting new people. Friends within your sober community can also help you protect your sobriety by offering the compassion and support you need during this challenging season of your life.
(2) Expand upon the holistic therapies you learned during treatment.
Many leading addiction recovery specialists use an integrated approach – combining both traditional 12-step methodologies with holistic therapies such as yoga, mindfulness meditation and acupuncture. Why not continue to put those new skills to work and meet new people at the same time? Talk to some of your peers who are also in recovery and plan on attending a yoga class or acupuncture session together.
(3) Explore opportunities in your neighborhood.
Many coffee and tea shops have a community bulletin board inside where locals post flyers about upcoming book clubs, poetry readings and get-togethers that are hosted on-site. The next time you swing by, take a few minutes to see if there are any upcoming events you might want to attend. And, in most instances, they are likely free to the public.
